Ideation
How Might We Improve How Employers Find Potential Candidates?
Career Ladder is an interactive visualization of how one might advance in a career. The students did not respond well to this feature and only wanted options they qualified for in the present moment. One student had an interesting critique on the oppressive symbology behind the career ladder and her suggestion was to change the symbol to something more positive—like a plant.
Skills You Can Learn is a helpful visual of the types of transferable skills one can learn from the job. The participants responded favorably to this feature appearing on job postings and felt that it was informative, reliable, and transparent.
Customizable Profile templates help jobseekers identify the kind of talents and skills they would like to showcase. Participants responded to how visually familiar the profile looked (like instagram) and responded poorly to features they were not familiar with (Linkedin), Participants did not like was having to post their photo on their profile and worried that it would create a discriminatory barrier.

Ideation & Concept Testing
The team spent an afternoon doing multiple rounds of brainstorming exercises, and the result produced over a dozen divergent concepts and features.
Insights
-
Students did not respond well to hierarchical concepts.
-
Students were progressive and strong critical thinkers.
-
All 30 students did not know what Linkedin was
-
12 out of 30 students were not worried about finding job opportunities after HS.
Refining our scope
None of our concepts were viable, so the team prepared for another round of brainstorming and concept testing informed by insights from the last round of testing.
-
Overwhelmingly positive response to concepts that focus on the individual identity and showcasing of skills
-
Subjects seemed to be confident in being able to present themselves if given the right tools
If I have learned anything during my time as a designer, it is that individuals tend to gloss over details. The modular job post is inspired by the traditional classified ads style job board. It is easily scannable, simplified but effective, and on one page.
Testing at Schurz High School was great, but having to test 30 teenagers was a challenge itself (adults are just as unfocused, we just do a better job at hiding it) and the test session definitely validated that teenagers need easy solutions. This job post is simple, organized, and easy to read.
‘Tags’ are a vital component of Yolobe's system and it is how users on the platform connect and it’s a process users currently neglect. By adding pre-populated tags for employers to select during onboarding improves and simplifies the interaction.

Our Solution
To be the premier platform for young job seekers, we defined and created a system that would provide an optimal end-to-end experience.
-
ADMINS - Admin's primary call-to-action is creating a post, but the lack of clarity behind the working parts of Yolobe's network model lacked a proper explanation and made the site very confusing for first-time users and our solution would require a nuanced onboarding process—a vital flow the platform lacked.
-
Job Seekers - Providing a dynamic onboarding experience by giving users a chance to lean into their skills through automation, thus providing employers proper parameters to find the talent they need.
Task Driven Usability Testing
We asked our participants to rate the prototype’s ease of use, language, and functionality on a Likert scale. Wanting to test our new employer flow, we prompted participants to navigate logging in, onboarding, creating an employer profile, and posting an opportunity.
